1st Battalion, 12th Marines
Commanding Officer's Message

Greetings Marines, Sailors, family, and friends of the battalion,

It has been a while since I have provided an update and much is changing as we enter into the PCS season. As with any unit returning from a deployment many of our folks who have been with the battalion for three years or so are beginning to say farewell and moving on to the next phase of their careers. As it is always sad to say “goodbye” to old friends, it is great to welcome their replacement with 1/12 Aloha spirit.

We are also preparing to send Bravo Battery to Okinawa in support of the Unit Deployment Program (UDP). This program and the batteries that support it are a critical element to the nation’s presence within the Pacific Theatre. While they are deployed, Bravo will become attached to 3rd Battalion, 12th Marines located at Camp Hansen on the island of Okinawa, Japan. This deployment will be the re-initiation of our support to the UDP. The plan will be for our battalion to continually schedule units on a rotating basis of 6-7 months. Echo Battery has already started to train for their deployment as they are scheduled to replace Bravo later this year.

The rest of the battalion is busy preparing for our semi-annual training event at Pohakuloa Training Area on the Big Island of Hawaii. Your Marines and Sailors will begin to embark in the next few weeks for this training and I plan to have everyone back home by mid-April at the latest. This training is vital for our Marine and Sailors to remain proficient and competent in their jobs. While we are at PTA keep in touch with Chris Scott, the Battalion Family Readiness Officer, via eMarine for battery updates and photos.

In other news, SgtMaj Lewis passes the “Sword of Office” to SgtMaj Davis on March 2nd. We celebrate SgtMaj Lewis’ success and thank him and his bride for their faithful and devoted service to the battalion. We welcome SgtMaj Davis and his wife to the 1/12 family and look forward to serving with you.

Semper Fidelis,
LtCol Sean S. Charney
“Spartan 6”
