Sergeant Major Steven E. Collier

UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

Sergeant Major Collier enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in May 1989. In June 1989, he attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina. In November 1989, Private Collier reported to the Marine Combat Training School at Camp Geiger, North Carolina. Upon graduation he received orders to the School of Infantry, Camp Geiger, North Carolina. Where he obtained the MOS of 0311, a Marine Riflemen and was promoted to Private First Class. While attending the School of Infantry, he was screened and selected to attend the Presidential Yankee White Program. He then received orders to report to Dam Neck Virginia to attend Marine Security Force Training. Upon completion of Security Force Training he reported to Marine Barracks 8th & I, Washington D.C. While at the Oldest Post in the Corps, he held the billets of a Basic Security Guard, Corporal of the Guard and was promoted to Lance Corporal.

During this tour of duty he was selected as part of the Pentagon Security Detail, directly responsible for guarding the Secretary of Defense and Deputy. In May, 1991, Lance Corporal Collier was transferred to Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. During his tour Lance Corporal Collier deployed with the 26TH Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) in the Mediterranean Sea on a 6 month deployment and participated in Operation Provide Promise/Deny Flight. Lance Corporal Collier was also part of the Trap BLT 2/2 during an operation in the area of Sarajevo, Bosnia and was promoted to Corporal. In April, 1993, Corporal Collier was reassigned to Fox Company, Marine Combat Training Battalion, Camp Geiger North Carolina as an Instructor Squad Leader and was promoted to Sergeant. In February, 1996, Sergeant Collier was transferred to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, where he held the billets of Squad leader and Platoon Sergeant. He deployed with the 24th MEU in the Mediterranean Sea on a 6 month deployment and participated in Operation Pacific Haven, JTF MARFORCOM, as Marine Security Forces Albania. With follow on operations conducting American Embassy reinforcement missions in Tirana Albania and was promoted to Staff Sergeant. He also deployed to Okinawa Japan for a 6 month Unit Deployment Program (UDP). During the deployment he participated in Operation Pacific Haven (Guam), Joint Task Force Noble Anvil and Operation Allied Forces, in the Adriatic Sea. In December, 1999, he was transferred to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina for Drill Instructor Duty. From January 2000 to June 2003, he served as Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, and Series Gunnery Sergeant and was meritoriously promoted to Gunnery Sergeant. He then went on to hold the billets of the Battalion Drill Master and Company First Sergeant. After a successful tour on the Drill field he was transferred to Officer Training Command, Newport Rhode Island. In July 2003, he was assigned as the Company Commander for the Basic Course, Naval Chaplain School. While there he was directly responsible for the Amphibious Operation Exercise during a nine weeks training accession for naval officers. In December 2006, Gunnery Sergeant Collier was selected to First Sergeant and assigned to Third Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team Company (3rd FAST), Marine Security Force Regiment, Norfolk, Virginia as the Company First Sergeant. In June 2008, First Sergeant Collier was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina as India Company First Sergeant. He deployed as a member of the Battalion Landing Team with the 22nd MEU in support of the Global War on Terrorism. First Sergeant Collier was selected to Sergeant Major in November 2009. After being frocked in January 2010 he was assigned to MAG 14, VMAT-203, and Cherry Point, North Carolina as Squadron Sergeant Major. After requesting orders, Sergeant Major Collier was directed to report to 2ND Battalion, 3rd Marines, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii in August of 2011 as the Battalion Sergeant Major.

Sergeant Major Collier’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal w/gold star in lieu of 2nd award, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal w/four gold stars in lieu of 5th award, Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal w/3 gold stars in lieu of 4th award, Good Conduct Medal w/silver star in lieu of 6th award and the Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. He holds an Associate’s Degree in Human Resource Management.
